The Safety Rider is one of several measures we have put in place at Momentum to build awareness around care and responsibility in the way artists work. It does not solve everything, and it is not meant to. It is a shared reference that makes expectations clear before an artist arrives. The rest happens through conversation, attention and time. We are sharing it, along with a template, for anyone who may find it useful. Purpose The Safety Rider sits alongside the technical and hospitality requirements of each artist's rider. Its role is to set out the conditions in which an artist performs, and to clarify who is responsible for what between the agency, the artist and the venue. Artists need a predictable environment to work in, and this is one way of describing it in advance. What the rider contains The document has two parts: artist care guidelines, which follow the artist through the evening, and general safety requirements for the venue. Before the performance The venue gives the artist the phone number of an Artist care manager, so they can reach someone immediately in case of an emergency within the club. This person shares the route from the venue to the hotel in advance, meets the artist at the entrance, then guides them to the green room, and from the green room to the booth or stage. During the performance No unauthorised person stands behind the artist or close to the booth without the artist's explicit permission. The Artist care manager comes to the booth to check in every 30 minutes. After the performance Once the set is over, the Artist care manager guides the artist from the booth or stage back to the green room, then from the green room to the exit. General safety The venue has a protocol on sexual harassment, discrimination, racism, homophobia and transphobia, along with an established safety team or a well-defined safety policy. A secured and calm green room is provided for the artist. Implementation The Safety Rider is attached to our booking contracts. By signing it, the promoter agrees to accept and comply with all the conditions it sets out. A blank template is available to download below. Clubs, agencies and artists are welcome to use it as a starting point and adapt it to their own context. Any feedbacks or advice is welcome, feel free to contact us
